Being a Author

Being an Author is not as easy as it sounds....So many people say they always wanted to write but never do....I use to say the same thing and never thought it would come true, but it did in the Summer of 2016 when My Michigan Saddlebred book was finished & released . You know your a Author/Writer when all you think about is writing, and book ideas for which I have numerous book ideas rolling around in my head and I look forward to getting them on paper and making them a reality by becoming a book!  So I guess that makes me an Author...But theres so much that goes into just writing the book, you have book layout, font, how many pages, photos or illustrations, inside front and back cover, front cover and back cover, author bio. Then theres the size of the book, book cover, soft cover or hard cover...its truly mind boggling and can be overwhelming, but if this is your passion, then this is what your meant to do in this Lifetime!

Michigan's role with the American Saddlebred

Greetings... American Saddlebred Lovers, and welcome to my hopefully frequent blog that I will be posting about Old Michigan Farms, Horses and People.

When in the course of writing my book, which I never saw myself as a writer, but here I am and super proud of all that I have accomplished at the young age of 46...

Everyone wants to know how the concept started of how I came to write " Gaited In The Great Lakes" well I will tell you..... Many years ago I was on the golf course, with a friend of mine who used to show Saddlebreds and as we were playing thru the course, she looks at me and says, "You know you ought to write a book on the history of the American Saddlebred here in Michigan" and I looked at her like she was on drugs.... I never thought I would be able to accomplish something like that and it was so out in left field.. Me the same person who failed miserably in her creative writing class in high school become a author?? So after thinking about this crazy idea, I decided I needed to get better advice on this and called my good friend Lynn Weatherman at ASHA and get his take on this, well after telling him, I got silence at the other end of the phone and Lynn finally said to me DO IT....it's never been done before. About 3 days later I got about 8 FedEx packages in the mail with research and well the rest is history................

This book at times I truly wanted to give up and just pack it away and never look at it again, but then I got encouragement from Family, Friends and People in the Horse community that said I need to follow this thru and fulfill my dream.....Boy that road seemed never ending like I was never going to be finished. I mean how much information can go into a book, without having way too much information, and you feeling like you've overloaded by all these horses, people, farms and pedigrees and etc.  You can't imagine all the research that I rifled thru and figuring out what stallions here in Michigan produced great show horses and finding if those horses went on to be being great show horses and produce anything that went on to make a name for themselves...Daunting to say the least. I spent many many hours on  the ASHA Database researching horses and figuring out who's who and recording it in my Bible( that's my book I carry where ever I go incase I run into someone who can provide me with info on Horses, Farms, People, Shows and Etc) I still carry the book with me. This was not a fly by the seat of my pants kind of project, when I do things I always do things right and presentable, my name is attached to this book, and I want the facts to be accurate and stories to be from the owners of the farms that were here in the past. I also conducted Person to person interviews, phone interviews, farm visits for photos and countless road trips..... thanks to Jeff!

I felt like a Archeologist, unearthing all this great history that was just under our noses, it just had to have the years of dirt brushed off and brought to light for all to enjoy....And boy let me tell you when I came across The Great Horses here, my hair on the back of neck stood up on end and I was so giddy and could not stop smiling and I just couldn't wait to tell someone what I had discovered......

My Hope is that when people read this book, they will be proud of Michigan and want to learn more and I'm also hoping that someone from each state, looks into their History with the American Saddlebred and they do a book, and this all catches on fire....... The only way we can preserve history is to uncover it, write about it and share with it everyone!

The feedback I've gotten on my book has been overwhelming. Such great reviews and I always get the same thing written " This should have been written years ago" yeah I know but it wasn't the time to do that and 2016 was the time to finish and get it published.

I look forward to future generations reading it and learning about our Rich Saddlebred History and also using the book as a reference guide.
